In the latest episode of OxTalks series three, we sat down with Melanie Tattersall, Director of Sustainability and Communications at Darcica Logistics, to discuss the essential role of sustainability in modern business and her advice for businesses looking to improve their ESG strategy.
Melanie has built her career streamlining operations for waste management organisations and local councils and has a passion for driving sustainable change in the industry.
In this podcast, Melanie shares why, for her, sustainability extends beyond the buzzword – it is about embedding care for the planet and people into every aspect of a business.
Darcica Logistics, based in Bicester, provides sustainable delivery and fulfilment services for Oxfordshire and beyond, including plastic-free ecommerce, eco-friendly deliveries with electric vehicles, and inventory management.
Aligned with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals, Darcica offers CO2-saving reports and real-time tracking, all while upholding family values and environmental stewardship.

Here’s our top five takeaways from the conversation with Melanie:
1. Staying calm in a crisis – growing a business amid COVID-19
During the first wave of COVID-19, online shopping saw a surge, meaning there was an unprecedented demand for delivery services. Melanie and her husband Anthony saw an opportunity to improve transport logistics in their local area and used their industry experience of over 20 years to set up Darcica Logistics.
The organisation quickly expanded from managing Amazon Prime fleets to opening their own warehouse in Bicester driven by their combined experience. Anthony’s background in large-scale transport deliveries and Melanie’s passion for sustainable waste management created a perfect synergy. Together, they’ve set their sights on providing a one-stop solution for sustainable logistics, for Oxfordshire and beyond.
2. Setting new benchmarks for sustainable logistics
With the introduction of its electric vehicle fleet and the implementation of a plastic-free fulfilment centre, Darcica Logistics is setting new benchmarks for sustainable logistics in Oxfordshire. It is one of the first companies in the UK to achieve full ‘Mission Zero’ accreditation – a Quality Standard for the road fleet sector and a scheme for organisations to adopt a roadmap towards zero collisions, emissions and prohibitions.
As Darcica grows, the challenge is to scale its sustainable practices without compromising on quality. Melanie discussed how they are planning to maintain their eco-friendly approach while expanding operations, a balancing act that involves continued investment in green technology and infrastructure.
3. Tackling EV infrastructure challenges
One of the most significant hurdles to a more widespread adoption of electric vehicles in logistics is the inadequate charging infrastructure, especially for larger electric trucks. Melanie noted that while Oxfordshire has made progress, there is still work to be done to ensure reliable, accessible, and fast-charging options for commercial EVs.
Despite these challenges, the opportunities to innovate are vast. Darcica is working closely with local authorities and businesses to expand EV charging capabilities, helping to lay the groundwork for a future where electric fleets become the norm.
4. Embedding ESG in business: Sustainability as a core strategy
A crucial takeaway from Darcica’s success story is how deeply embedded sustainability is in their day-to-day operations. ESG isn’t treated as an afterthought or a corporate responsibility, but as a central part of the company’s identity.
This philosophy – adopted by all in-house team members – drives Darcica’s efforts in lowering carbon emissions, reducing waste, and building a responsible and resilient business model.
5. Collaborating with the local innovation ecosystem
Joining Melanie in this insightful discussion was Rob Panting, Communications Manager at OxLEP, who elaborated on how OxLEP helps nurture Oxfordshire’s world-leading innovation ecosystem by connecting businesses to the right resources.
Darcica has greatly benefited from OxLEP’s tailored support and funding opportunities, starting with completing the seven-minute Business Support Tool online. From receiving this initial guidance, Darcica went on to receive funding through the Business Investment Fund for a pallet wrap machine, helping them to improve productivity in the warehouse.
OxLEP’s ongoing assistance is helping Darcica to scale its operations and enhance its positive impact on the community and environment. Rob explains that Darcica’s success story is proof that even small-to-medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the region can lead the way in green innovation, serving as inspiration for other local businesses aiming to adopt more sustainable practices
As Melanie’s advice to small businesses reflects, having passion for your mission and committing to sustainability can set your business up for long-term success.
If you’re a local business looking to follow in Darcica’s footsteps, now is the time to get in touch.
